Eye Health Tips for Working from Home

One of the biggest problems many of us are experiencing with working from home is severe eye strain from staring at screens all day. These eye health tips can help you protect your eyes and make working from home a more enjoyable experience.

Give Your Eyes a Break
Eye strain is becoming a big problem because most of us are not giving our eyes a break during the workday, and even in our downtime, there isn’t much else to do but scroll on our phones and watch TV and movies. So, while this eye health tip may seem like a no-brainer, it serves as an important reminder to take regular breaks and go for a walk for fresh air, or simply look out the window and collect your thoughts.

Change the Lighting
You may not think you need this eye health tip because you have lights in your workspace, but they might actually be working against you. If it’s too bright or too dark in your workspace, it could be causing your eyes to strain more to combat glare or as a result of your screen brightness being unnecessarily high.

Posture
Although improving your posture will improve your overall physical well-being, it happens to be a tip for improving your eye health as well. You want to set your screen up so that your eyes can fall naturally on your screen or paperwork. Setting your work screen up too high or low forces the muscles in your face to keep your eyes at an unnatural position, which can lead to strain. Look away from your screen and see where your gaze naturally falls, it should be slightly lower than straight ahead, and that’s how you should set up your workstation.

Ensure You Have the Correct Prescription
This eye health tip is geared towards those who already wear glasses, but if you don’t, it doesn’t hurt to make sure you don’t need them by getting an eye exam. If your prescription is out of date, or slightly off, it can increase your eye strain exponentially. It’s also important to wear the right glasses for the task at hand. For example, if you need glasses for distance, it might be a good idea to get a different pair to use when you’re working up close on your laptop. If you’re unsure if you’re using the right prescription, do your eyes a favour and book an eye exam.
