We’re sure we don’t need to tell you that your eyes are very important.
What you may not be aware of is that taking care of your eyes can often mean taking care of the rest of your body.
There is an obvious link between eye health and your vision. Eye shape is a genetically determined trait and is the main determinant in whether or not you have near-sightedness (Myopia), far-sightedness (Hyperopia), or astigmatism. Near-sightedness and far-sightedness are often caused by the eyeball being too long or too short, whereas astigmatism is determined by the shape of the cornea or lens.
Even in circumstances where you suffer only slightly from these vision problems, if they are not met with proper vision correction you are likely to experience re-occurring headaches and eyestrain.
Eye safety is the other main contributing factor to vision. A failure to protect your eyes from harmful forces can accelerate vision problems. For example, wearing sunglasses with the proper protection can protect your eyes from harmful UV rays (UVA, UVB) which can speed up diseases such as Macular Degeneration.
Most other vision problems will occur naturally with time.
For example, as your age climbs upwards of 40 and 50, the lens in your eyes become harder and the ligaments (Zonules) become weaker. Subsequently, it becomes harder for your eyes to focus. However, a simple solution for this is using reading glasses. Your best option to prepare yourself for these developments is to schedule an eye exam so they can diagnose you properly.
Eye exams are the key to all eye health.
To appropriately deal with the stress that vision problems can put on your body, you need to be examined. It needs to be kept in mind, however, that an eye exam is not only used to maintain the health of your eyes. Eye exams can often be used to find an early diagnosis of much more serious problems with your health such as:
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- High Blood Pressure
- High Cholesterol
- Studies suggest Alzheimer’s Disease
These are very serious diseases and in each case, the best way to deal with them is with early diagnosis.
So, while there are more basic techniques for keeping your eyes healthy such as not rubbing them, washing your hands before touching them, and wearing sunglasses or safety glasses when in dangerous environments, the most important thing to do is to get your eyes examined.
