Every year, on the second Thursday of October, there is a global event to draw attention to blindness and vision impairment. This year, that day falls on October 12 and this year’s World Sight Day is coordinated by The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO).
Make Vision Count
Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable with treatment and/or prevention. On 2017 World Sight Day, the IAPB will releasing the latest data on the prevalence of avoidable blindness and visual impairment and will have projections up to the year 2020. Even with advancements in technology and medicine — far too many people globally are living with blindness or impaired vision.
Schedule Eye Exams
One of the best ways to participate in 2017 World Sight Day is to ensure that you and your loved ones have regular eye exams. During a comprehensive exam, an optometrist will check your vision, prescribe eyewear and check for early signs of eye diseases that could cause blindness.
Donate Glasses
In addition to scheduling eye exams, collect any unused glasses you may have and drop them off at your nearest Hakim Optical location. Many of the people struggling with vision impairment live in developing countries and face steep barriers trying to obtain prescription eyeglasses. Hakim Optical has already donated 50,000 pairs of prescription glasses to the Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre and we have collection bins at all our locations for the public to donate their eyewear that is no longer needed.
