Winter is a tough time for many people—the cold temperatures, ice and snow make it miserable to step outside. But did you know that winter is also a difficult season for your eyes? Take a few precautions and follow our winter eye care tips to keep your vision healthy this season.
Eye Care Tips:
- Keep Eyes Moisturized – Winter is known for its dry air, and you’ve likely noticed that your skin dries out or lips often get chapped. What you might not realize is that your eyes might be suffering as well. Keep eyes moisturized by using rewetting drops or artificial tears, using a humidifier and staying hydrated.
- Use Sunglasses – People seem to think that sunglasses are only for the summer, but they’re just as important in the winter. When there’s snow on the ground and it’s a sunny day, harmful UV rays can reflect off the ground and damage eyes.
- Take a Break from Screens – When the weather turns cold, sometimes it’s nicer to stay in watching a movie than spending time outdoors. If you find yourself hibernating during the winter months, make sure to give your eyes a regular break from digital screens. We recommend taking a break every 20 minutes and looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Invest in Goggles – When participating in outdoor sports, make sure to protect your eyes with goggles as the wind and cold can draw out moisture and blur vision.
Most of us bundle up with warm jackets, scarves, hats and gloves in the winter, but not many think about protecting their eyes and vision. Keep warm and protect your eyes with the above winter eye care tips.
