While many of us have become accustomed to eye pain due to increased screen time, we tend to ignore it because we think it’s strain-related, but that isn’t always the case. Eye pain should never be ignored, regardless of the severity, and some of the causes of eye pain are more serious than others.
Diagnosing Eye Pain
Eye pain and headaches often go hand-in-hand, and they can occur due to a variety of reasons, including outdated prescriptions, prolonged periods of strain, and too much screen time. Unfortunately, they can also be the result of more serious issues like eye disease and infections. Eye pain and headaches that are caused by prolonged screen time should go away with the help of some drops and a much-needed nap. If the pain doesn’t go away, it could indicate a more serious problem, and at that point you should contact an eye doctor.
What’s causing your eye pain and headaches?
You shouldn’t immediately assume your eye pain is being caused by something serious, but it’s important to know what you’re up against. Glaucoma and optic neuritis are two of the most common causes of severe eye pain, and although many people believe Glaucoma only affects elderly people, it can affect anyone, even babies. That being said, eye pain isn’t the only symptom of Glaucoma or the lesser-known acute angle-closure Glaucoma, so don’t jump to conclusions too soon. The other symptoms include:
- Bloodshot eyes
- Eye pressure
- Blurry vision
- Queasiness and nausea
- Severe eye pain
- Intense headaches and migraines
If you experience these symptoms you should contact an optometrist immediately, but the symptoms could also be the result of other less severe problems like astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia. Another one of the most common causes of eye pain is an outdated prescription, so if you haven’t had an eye exam in a while, the pain you’re experiencing is likely a sign that it’s time to update your prescription, as a person’s vision does change over time
What should you do if you experience eye pain and headaches?
As we mentioned above, even if you think you know what’s causing your eye pain, it’s best to let an optometrist give you their professional diagnosis, so schedule an exam as soon as possible. Make sure you bring the following items to your eye appointment to ensure your eye doctor can properly diagnose the cause and help you find a solution:
- Your vision insurance card (if you have one)
- Detailed notes on the date, time, and circumstances surrounding your pain
- A piece of photo I.D.
- A brief description of your family’s medical history
- A list of all of your current medications and medical history
