Tips for First Time Bifocal Glasses Wearers

As you age, so do your eyes, and one of the most common age-related vision conditions is called presbyopia. The condition is similar to farsightedness, but it requires you to wear bifocals in most cases. Making the change to bifocals can take some time to get used to, but these bifocal glasses tips can help ease the transition.

What are Bifocals?
Before we dive into the bifocal glasses tips, it’s important that you understand what they are. Bifocals have two prescriptions in one lens separated by a line so that you can look through the upper half to see distance and the lower portion to see things that are close to you. Most people choose to get bifocal glasses, but you can also get bifocal contacts.

Tip 1: Patience
It can take time for your eyes to adjust to using bifocal glasses, so one of the most important tips to remember is to give it time. With normal glasses, you just have to get used to seeing the frames all the time and eventually you’ll stop noticing them, but bifocals have more going on so it can take a couple of weeks to adjust. It’s best to wear them as much as possible so you can adjust faster to the image jumping that occurs due to the two different prescriptions in the lenses.

Tip 2: Look Up
This is one of those tips that you’ll understand immediately once you start wearing bifocal glasses. Most of us instinctively look down at our feet while we walk, but looking through the bottom portion of the lens can make your feet appear blurry and magnified. The problem with this is it can make you feel disoriented and disrupt your depth perception. Not to worry though, it’s a simple fix. All you need to do is look slightly ahead, or if you’re walking in an area that requires you to watch your step, just tilt your head down a little bit more so you’re looking through the upper portion of the lens.

Tip 3: Contact Your Optician
The bifocal glasses tips above are meant to help you get through the transition phase, but if you aren’t experiencing any improvement after a little while, then don’t hesitate to contact your optometrist. It’s possible that your prescription is incorrect, or the bifocal line may need to be adjusted to suit your needs. Regardless of the problem, your optometrist can help you find a solution.
