If you feel like there’s something irritating your eyes, but you can’t find a source for the discomfort or if you’re experiencing a constant burning or gritty feeling—you could be suffering from dry eye syndrome. When there’s not enough moisture to nourish your eyes, you can experience a range of symptoms from a little redness to blurred vision. Ignoring dry eyes can damage eye tissue and could even scratch the cornea.
There are a number of reasons for eyes to dry out. It could be a symptom of the natural aging process or could be a side-effect of a medication. Some people notice that they only suffer from the condition when the weather starts to turn cold and that’s a sign that there are environmental factors to blame.
When exposed to bitter cold winds outside or central heating inside, tear quantity can decrease and cause eye discomfort. Spending time in front of a computer screen can further aggravate symptoms because we tend to blink less when staring at a screen.
To help prevent dry eyes this winter there are a few precautions to take:
- Increase humidity levels indoors.
- Wear sunglasses when going outside.
- Drink more water.
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds to give eyes a rest from screens.
- Hydrate with eye drops.
Dry eyes once a while is usually nothing to worry about but if you suffer symptoms constantly, it’s best to schedule an eye exam appointment. An optometrist will be able to determine if you have dry eye syndrome and will be able to provide a few different treatment options.
