If you’ve worn glasses for a while, you’re familiar with changing and evolving prescriptions. As we age, our eyes can change, and so too does our ability to see clearly. If you’ve ever Googled “how often does my prescription change?” this blog is the answer for you, plus, we’ve also added a few other answers to our frequently asked questions about prescription changes as time goes on.
How Often Does My Prescription Usually Change?
On average, most people experience a change in their prescription between once a year and once every three years. While the guidelines are in place, every person is different and every person experiences a different level of eye health and eye damage throughout their life. So, while some people only experience a change in prescription once every one to two years, someone with an eye condition may experience change far more often.
A few reasons that a prescription may change within a year are:
- Myopia
- Cataracts
- Age-related degeneration
- Keratoconus
- Presbyopia
- Astigmatisms
Is A Sudden Change In My Prescription Cause For Concern?
While a sudden change in your prescription is usually abnormal, often if you haven’t had your eyes checked in a while it can feel more drastic than it is. A sudden change in prescription isn’t something to panic about, but it should be responded to appropriately by booking an eye exam because, in case of sudden prescription changes due to a disease (eye-based or otherwise), it usually won’t be apparent to the naked eye and should be looked at by a professional with proper equipment.
How Often Should I Get My Eyes Examined?
Between the ages of 6 and 20, we recommend that you schedule an eye exam once every year. Once you’re around the age of 21, it’s recommended that you schedule eye exams every two years as your prescription will change less frequently as you enter adulthood. Then, once you’re over the age of sixty, it’s recommended that you go back to scheduling an eye exam once every year, as your eyes will change more drastically and frequently as you age.
